Maggie’s

Maggie's provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends. Cancer often has a significant impact on a person's finances due to loss of earnings and increased costs such as heating and travel and many patients aren't aware of the support they are entitled to. They received a grant of £80,000 from Bank of Scotland Foundation towards the salary costs of Benefits Advisors in all 8 Maggie's Centres across Scotland.

Most months one Benefits Advisor can conduct over 200 appointments with many clients unaware of the financial support they are entitled to and very little understanding of the complex benefits system. By helping people to access the money they are entitled to, in Glasgow alone the service has delivered income maximisation of £3.2 million to his clients.  As a result of income maximisation, the financial burden for those with cancer and their families decreases and they are able to focus more on their health and spending time with loved ones.

Over the two year funding period of their Large Grant from Bank of Scotland Foundation, Maggie's expect their service to support around 15,000 appointments and deliver income maximisation of over £10 million to support those with cancer and their families.
